Abstract: The probability of incipient motion for nonuniform sediment is an important parameter in mechanics of sediment transport, which is often used in the governing equations and boundary conditions of mathematical models. However, there were few theoretical research and experimental data on incipient probability, especially for nonuniformsediment, thusrestrictingtheunderstandingandsimulationofnon-uniform sediment transportation. This study aims to improve the understanding on incipient probability for nonuniform sediment through theoretical and experimental investigations. A new experimental method for the probabilities of sediment motion was proposed and used in flume experiments with uniform and nonuniform sediment. Then the formulas for incipient probability were verified and compared based on the experimental results. Considering the incipient and non-cease probability, the formula of nonuniform bedload transport rate was established from the two-state exchange model, which was more reasonable in theory. The formula was further validated by collected experimental data and it showed ahigher accuracy compared with exisited formulas. Thisstudyillustratesthatitisreasonabletoexplorethepossibilityofincipient motion from the perspective of force, which enriches the bedload transporttheory.
