Abstract: It has been found that the dominant stream from the junction between the Jinsha and Yalong Rivers to Pingshan is the main source of incoming sediment of the Three Gorges Reservoir. Therefore, it is important to examine the bedload sediment in the lower reaches of the Jinsha River, as well as solve the problems related to the unclear bedload sediment at the outlet, in order to improve the sediment background data. These improvements can potentially provide important technical support for the construction of the Jinsha River cascade hydropower station, along with acceptance strategies prior to the impoundment, bedload siltation expectations after the impoundment, and effective operational and management approaches. At the same time, the analysis of the rules of the bedload movements will be of great academic significance for enriching the content of the sediment disciplines. In the current study, based on the results of model tests and the study of bedload sediment at the outlets of cascade hydropower stations in the lower reaches of the Jinsha River, the laws of the bedload sediment transportation was discussed and the relationships between the bedload sediment transport rates and the water-sediment factors were established. Also, the multi-year average bed load sediment transportation rates at the outlet of the cascade hydropower stations in the lower reaches of the Jinsha River under natural conditions were determined to be 1.046 million tons.
