Abstract: Standard analytical and empirical results of hydraulic jumps are reanalyzed. The assumption that momentum but not energy is conserved across a jump is abandoned. The limiting case when energy dissipation is maximum is explicitly considered, which could be useful when hydraulic jumps are used to dissipate energy. Chow's empirical results and some recent experimental observations are compared to the present predictions.
