Abstract: Starting with formulas for infiltration capacity and for ponding time at a point scale, and statistical distribution of conductivity, the law of infiltration for a parcel is derived. It accounts for the fact that runoff from the ponded surfaces will cause “runon” and thus opportunity for infiltration in yet unponded zones. Equations at the parcel scale are derived under different assumptions about hydraulic conductivity and the disposition of the excess rainfall on the parcel. Calculations comparing the results under different scenarios show that for the same values of the parameters and similar assumptions in the derivations, the results depend much on the scenario.
