Abstract: A one dimensional nonlinear hyperbolic model lhat describes the unsteady sediment transport rate in an alluvial channel is presented. Solutions that are independent of other physical quantities involved have been obtained. This system, when used to evaluate the long time morphological changes due to constant upstream overloading, can be well approximated by one or two second order ordinary differential equations. An implicit numerical scheme has been developed for purposes of verification of the present nonlinearequation and its asymptotic solutions. In deriving the governing equation, a minimum of restrictive assumptions have been invoked. The results have been appraised by comparing them with the exact solutions to a linear model as well as with currently available experimental data.
