Abstract: Summary A numerical method of obtaining the transfer function of a single input-output system is presented. The equations are developed in the time domain and the resulting mathematical model reduces to a linear difference equation with constant coefficients. Details such as convergence and numerical particularities are discussed. The model is validated by its application ("off-" and "on-line") to the classic problem of flood routing in a river reach, taking a hypothetical rectangular channel and a 45 km segment of the Gatineau river (Qué., Canada) as the testing grounds.
