Abstract: Formulae have been derived which relate the equilibrium scour depth upstream of cylindricalbridge piers caused by horseshoe vortex systems to various flow parameters. Assumptionshave been made concerning the vortex size and shape during the scouring processand concerning the forces on particles within the scour hole. The derived formulae are found to be in good agreement with the results of Baker [1]and Chabert and Engeldinger [3], and with the design formula of Breusers et al [2].
