Abstract: The water exchange capacity in Cigu lagoon (the largest lagoon in Taiwan) is investigated using a two-dimensional depth-averaged shallow water model coupling to an Eulerian solute transport model. Water exchange capacity is evaluated by computing local residence time with a consideration on the effects of sand-barrier morphological changes in 2005 and 2012. Results show that the LRT in lagoon is heterologous with a LRT generally smaller than 6 days close to inlets and greater than 16 days elsewhere. The overall flushing capacity in lagoon is around 36%and 44%after 16days computations.
