Abstract: This paper describes the development of a numerical model to determine the erosion of a dike. The numerical model is based on large scale physical model tests and contains the derived formulas for the erosion rate of clay and sand. Recently, the formula for the erosion rate in clay was adapted according to the results of numerical simulations and included in the numerical dike erosion model. Furthermore, it was noted that the numerical dike erosion model did not work appropriate with a varying water level, such as from storm surges or in tidal areas. Therefore, the model is recently adapted for a varying water level. The new procedure had to be evaluated by engineering judgement based on several test cases, because there are no experiments with a varying water level to verify the model. One of the test cases is presented in this paper.
