Abstract: In this study, the usage of bed sill as a new approach in order to reduce the scour downstream of the stilling basins have been presented. For this purpose, the effect of bed sill on local scour downstream of a turbulent jet has been experimentally investigated. Experiments have been performed in a rectangular flume and the bed sills with different heights (a) and distances (x) have been used. The results also showed that the bed sill height has no effect on the location of the maximum scour depth upstream the sill. Increasing the bed sill height may decrease the maximum scour depth up to about 95 percent. Verifying the results showed that the bed sill with a=2 cm and x=14 cm causes minimum scour depth and therefore it was selected as optimum sill location.
