Mathematical Modeling of Ghg Balance in a Subtropical Reservoir in South Brazil

Abstract: Greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) in reservoirs, notably methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) have been focus of intense research in the last decade, focused on measuring fluxes of these gases, mainly at air-water interface. Within this context, this paper presents a zero-dimensional mathematical model capable of estimating the carbon balance in the reservoir considering the dynamics of organic and inorganic carbon, considering their dissolved and particulate fractions, interactions with the sediment and the influence of meteorological and hydrological forcings. The model also estimates diffusive and bubbling fluxes of CH4and CO2. The case study is the Capivari Reservoir (Paraná, South Brazil) a 45 years old reservoir. The results indicate a mean methane emission over 43 years of simulation of 27. 41 mg CH4m-2d-1 while the reservoir storage carbon at a rate of 720 mg Cm-2d-1. The Capivari Reservoir emits CH4but stores carbon at a higher rate so it attenuates greenhouse effect by an equivalent absorption of 529. 3 mg CO2eq m-2d-1.
