Abstract: Numerical simulations are conducted to show how the dilution of the effluent from desalination plant is accurately determined by the Lagrangian advection of blocks. Block refinement study shows the block advection method is effective and reliable. Block-size independent results has been obtained from the the simulations using relatively coarse block sizes. Studies in the past have been focused on the negatively buoyant jet near the source. The dilution of the density current on the sea floor as it turn out is found from the present simulation to be the more significant fraction of the total. We therefore recommend based on this observation to include the density current on the sea floor as part of consideration in the planning and design of desalination facilities.
