Abstract: Scouring due to tsunami may bring about significant damages to structures that may lead to casualties. The extent of scouring around single or rows of piles depends on tsunami inundation height, speed of the surge, duration of inundation, soil material, and diameter of the piles. The paper discuss the pattern and the maximum scour depthdue to a tsunami around rows of cylinders of various spaces between cylinders. The study was conducted in a flume of 20.7 m long that was divided in to two parts by a quickopening gate to create a tsunami like surge. The downstream part represented a sloping beach of 1:20and was made using fine sand of average diameter equals 0.2 mm. The upstream part (basin) depth was 0.5 m, whilst the maximum water depth downstream of the gate was 0.2 m. Rows of cylinder piles of various gaps size were installed downstream of the gate. Thediameter of the piles was 11.5cm. It was found that the distance between cylinders piles significantly affect both the scour pattern and the maximum scour depth. The maximum scour depth around rows of cylinder piles was found to be significantly deeper than the scour around single cylinder pile. There was an optimum gap to diameter ratiothat produced deepest scour.
