Abstract: Approximately 190,000 irrigation ponds are locally-distributed in Japan. The number of irrigation pond in Hyogo prefecture is 38,234 at April 2015. The Higashi-Harima region in Hyogo prefecture is taken up as a study area as it is regarded one of the most prominent regions of irrigation pond. In this paper, we review the historical background of irrigation ponds in this region over the last several centuries, and discuss the current proposition and the new challenges such as the multifunctional benefits which promote public awareness and encourage local people to maintain and manage the irrigation ponds.
