Abstract: The Vietnamese coast faces a number of potential coastal threats, mainly originating from the East Sea, an area which has been recognized to have the potential to generate large tsunamis as well as typhoons, which can sometimes generate significant storm surges. However, for a successful evacuation it is not only necessary to have a warning system, but for the local population to be aware of the dangers posed by such event and know what to do in each case. In the present paper, the authors surveyed both the warning systems currently being constructed along the central coast of Vietnam (south of Da Nang) and the Mekong Delta, and carried out questionnaires amongst local inhabitants on their awareness and preparedness against both tsunamis and storm surges. The results show that generally speaking the local population has a high degree of awareness about the dangers posed by coastal natural disasters, though there is still a need to increase preparedness against possible future events.
