Abstract: A method is proposed of predicting water level for flood in rivers. It is a combination of discharge prediction by Muskingum-Cunge flood routing and conversion of thus calculated discharge into stage using discharge-stage relationship. The discharge-stage relationship are developed using pairs of discharge and stage data simulated by dynamic wave model. A distributed parameter Muskingum-Cunge model is established for which different parameters are assigned to different sub-reaches. Muskingum-Cunge parameters are estimated using cross-sectional and longitudinal channel geometry, and Manning’s equation for uniform flow. A dynamic wave model was applied to the South Han River not only to estimate roughness coefficient, but also to develop discharge-stage relationship. Then, the distributed parameter Muskingum-Cunge model was applied to simulate the discharges at Yeoju station, and the developed discharge-stage relationship was used to calculate the stages. Thus calculated discharges and stages were compared with those simulated by the dynamic wave model.
