Abstract: We have developed a finite element mass-consistent model to estimate the typhoon wind field in storm surge analysis. It is important to estimate the influence of climate change on coastal farmlands in order to stabilize farming in such areas. The rising sea level and more powerful typhoons are two major impacts of climate change on coastal farmland. Storm surge analysis using the so-called “experimental typhoon model” is used to estimate disasters caused by storm surges. It is a simple and practical model, but does not sufficiently reproduce the wind field because it does not consider the topography of land terrain. Our simulation aims to estimate the degree of damage and the roles of drainage facilities such as pumping stations and channels in mitigating storm surge disasters. We employ the finite element model to represent the drainage facilities scattered in coastal farmlands, whereas the finite difference model is widely used for storm surge simulation.
