Abstract: The purpose of this study is to make the impactofcoastal erosion clear at four different communes in the coastal area of Tam Giang lagoon, and to examine some countermeasures against the erosion, taking into account the effects of sea level rise in the future. The coastline around the inlets of lagoon has changed greatly in the past by coastal erosion and big flooding. It is very difficult to prevent coastal erosion by some kinds of civil engineering works. It would be better way to move the people into a new settlement systematically beforehand. Even in the coast apart from the two inlets of lagoon, the coastline has retreated continuously about 50~100m in width over the past several decades. It is necessary to estimate appropriately the impacts of coastal erosion in the near future on the area developed for beach resort or intensive shrimp farming and important archeological site in the coastal lowland.
