Abstract: The present paper shows the effect of the Isahaya Sea Dyke on the baroclinic structure due to freshwater inflow from several rivers in the Ariake Sea, Japan. Numerical simulation of tidal current and salinity stratification was conducted in cases of floods in 2006 with and without the dyke. As a result, the followings were clarified: 1) The dyke can decrease the velocity of tidal current and strengthen salinity stratification in inner part of Isahaya Bay and in coastal area off Shimabara Peninsula; 2) Stratification can be strengthened by the dyke in spring tide, but not in neap tide; and 3) Influences of the dyke on the baroclinic structure due to freshwater depends on condition of tide and flow rate of rivers.
