The Causes of Cracks, Safety Evaluation and Solutions for Emergency Repairs of Ban Tien Dam in Soc Son District, Hanoi City

Abstract: Earth dam refers to a type of water raising structure commonly built in Vietnam. However, as soils are typically porous, permeable, deformable, unless the construction and management follow strictly regulations for compaction, anti-seepage and slope protection, the dam is vulnerable to deterioration, failure of settlement, cracking, sliding and seepage. . . . . Ban Tien is a small dam in Soc Son district, Hanoi city. The dam was built since 1970s of the previous decade, upgraded in1996. In 2010, due to prolonged hot weather, it’s discovered in Ban Tien dam of 7 cracks crossing dam body which were 1-3 cm in width, penetrating from upstream to downstream, causing the risk of leakage and dam breach in flood season. It’s therefore, very necessary to undertake investigation and evaluation of causes of cracks and dam safety assessment as well as selection of emergency solutions to be done before flood season. It was very hard and complicated job as the available dam data was insufficient while the evaluation was required urgently, comprehensively and the emergency solutions were required for addressing dam safety issue within a short time (1-2 months) to be completed before flood season. The task has been assigned over the Engineering Institute of Water Resources University and it was completed satisfactory in terms of quality and progress. This article presented geological investigations, analysis of causes of cracks, calculations and evaluations of seepage, stability and deformability of dam when the cracks and porous areas formed in dam body under various working conditions. Emergency solutions for dam safety in flood season has been recommended and applied successfully by the local government.
