Abstract: The need for better use of water and energy has been considered as one of the most important subjects worldwide and it will become more important in the near future. Due to climate changes, the storm rainfall hyetographs have been modified and runoff in urban area has increased for the last decades causing major floods. Flood drainage systems are essential infrastructures in urban areas to control floods, which can include retention ponds that can be used as innovative solutions adapted to climate changes and smart water grids to produce energy in a near future and to improve the drainage system elasticity. Retention ponds help managing water and handling runoff that can be used as innovative water use and hydropower solution. The purpose of this paper is to analyze retention ponds to manage the water inflow from storm events and to establish a methodology to produce water storage and energy production using this water. Hence, this study consists of identifying the influence of retention ponds for microhydro installation in drainage systems and finding best set-up to optimize the power generation. The remaining water can be managed also for irrigation. Results are presented showing the influence of retention ponds in irrigation solution and in the production.
