Abstract: The Venda Nova Hydroelectric power scheme is located in the north of Portugal, within the Cavado river mountainous basin, the Portuguese region with the highest rainfall records, in a unique location that allows the use of a 420 m head achieved on a stretch of merely 4, 5 km. Next to the first repower of the Venda Nova scheme (Venda Nova II-2005), EDP has decided to increase again the power of Venda Nova (Venda Nova III). Both schemes are mostly underground on the granite rock mass of the river Rabagao left margin. Several scale hydraulic model studies of the main hydraulic structures were performed, including the outlet and downstream channel. Description of these models and results obtained are presented in the paper.
