Abstract: To improve the knowledge of morphodynamic processes in shallow water sections of Wadden Sea areas a numeric model is developed based on field measurements. Supported by the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) the Institute of River and Coastal Engineering at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) runs extensive measurements to collect data on Wadden Sea areas in the mouth of the estuary Elbe at the German North sea coast. Since July 2006 water levels, flow and wave parameters as well as the concentrations of suspended sediment are recorded in high resolution. The bathymetry of the tidal channel is determined by a multi-beam eco sounder in frequent intervals. Along the boundaries of a hydro-numeric morphodynamic model the flow parameters and sediment concentrations must be known. Since discharge boundary conditions nearby the investigation area can not be measured a large-scale hydro-numeric model of the estuary mouth is developed to generate the hydrodynamic boundary conditions for a small-scale hydro-numeric morphodynamic model which covers only a part of the main tidal channel and the surrounding tidal flats. The recorded sediment concentrations are used as boundary condition for the sediment transport model. The paper and the presentation will include a short description of the investigation area and will then detail the two dimensional depth averaged numeric models for which the Finite Element Model RMA·Kalypso is used. The transfer of the boundary conditions and the simulation of the drying and rewetting by using the marsh-algorithm will be specified. The modelled results will be compared to the field measurements and an outlook for further research will be given.
