Abstract: This paper, which is written from an unapologetically personal point of view, considers the state of UK research in support of the developing marine renewable energy sector. It considers the changes in the research environment over the author’s thirty years experience in marine renewable energy as well as presenting an overview of some of the most significant ongoing research activity in the UK. In particular, the activities of the Supergen (Marine) research consortium are presented and some of the projects which are commencing as the client sector moves towards eventual commercial viability are discussed.
