Abstract: The Directive 2007/60/EC of the European Parliament and the Council on the assessment and management of flood risks (Flood Risk Management DirectiveFRMD) provides a framework for the mitigation and/or prevention of flood-related detrimental effects on human health, the environment, cultural heritage and business activities within the Community. The Flood Risk Management Plan (FRMP) for the Hessian catchment area of the Fulda River is a Hessian pilot project for the practical implementation of these specifications. Those have meanwhile been introduced into national law and the laws of the German Federal States. In addition to drawing up a flood risk management plan that will satisfy requirements foreseeable in 2010, the focus was on defining approaches for the use of existing data and “inputs” . Another important challenge was the feedback in terms of outputs from this process into the technical discussions for preparing further flood risk management plans in the State of Hessen. Particular significance was moreover placed on the exchange of expertise and the involvement of affected communities, public agencies and interested members of the general public.
