Abstract: The 2-D finite element method for solving the shallow water problem and for transporting bed load on sand bar overgrown with plants is presented. The SUPG 1 is adopted for spatial discretion and for the numerical integration scheme. Our work consists of two parts; One is to analyze river channel flow including the super critical flow, and the other is to simulate how a sand bar overgrown with plants deforms when water floods over it. The accuracy of the calculation model is demonstrated on several numerical results for a real open river channel.
