Calibration of a Hybrid Rainfall-Runoff Model in an Arid Environment

Abstract: On February 23-24, 1998 a frontal system passed through Southern Nevada and resulted in significant precipitation over a large region. In one location on the U. S. Department of Energy=s (DOE) Nevada Test Site (NTS), the precipitation event caused significant runoff from a watershed that was then conveyed several kilometers by natural channels and roadside drainage ditches to a subsidence crater resulting from an underground nuclear weapons test. Through a fortuitous set of circumstances, there were precipitation gages in the immediate area; there was equipment in the bottom of the crater to measure the depth of collected water; and there were personnel in the field just after the event. This unique data set allowed the development and calibration of a hybrid HEC-1 rainfall-runoff model that included channel transmission losses.
