Abstract: Three-dimensional numerical modelling is being used in a comprehensive study of water and sediment diversion at the Old River Control complex on the lower Mississippi River. The modelling, along with extensive field data collection and geomorphic analysis, is providing support for decisions related to increasing the diversion of sediment from the Mississippi to the Atchafalaya River. The objective is to achieve long-term morphologic stability of the Atchafalaya without inducing concomitant long-term instability in the Mississippi. The modelling is based on the CH3D code for unsteady hydrodynamics and mobile-bed simulation in natural geometries. This paper includes a general description of the study area and project objectives; a brief description of the CH3D code; and description of preliminary mobile-bed simulation results.
