Physical Model Study on Two-Phase Cascade Flow

Abstract: A series of hydraulic model investigations following a novel experimental approach was conducted to analyze skimming flow over cascades or stepped spillways. New experimental data on air concentration, on the inception of air entrainment and on energy dissipation in stepped spillways are presented and compared to smooth chute flows. The results demonstrate that the energy dissipation capacity of stepped spillways was often overestimated in earlier model studies due to insufficient consideration of the aeration process.
