Abstract: A computational fluid dynamics technique is used to investigate the effect of the wind on the rainfall measurements. The focus is on a new instrument, a 2-D video distrometer that provides valuable information about rain rate and rain drop size distribution. The distorted wind field around and inside the instrument body is simulated using a 3-D numerical model. A modified geometrical design, suggested for operational purposes, is also tested. Trajectories of rain drops are simulated to investigate the wind effect on the catchment efficiency of the instrument. A stochastic Lagrangian tracking model that accounts for the turbulence features of the wind field is used.
