Abstract: Water quality problems related to eutrophication were studied at Lake Yanaka, Japan with the aim to reveal the demands on the design of a water quality model. Therefore this study investigated the main characteristics of the influence of reservoir operation on water quality, the hydrodynamic behavior and the spatial variation of water quality. Special attention was paid to phosphorus and its significance as growth-limiting nutrient. Also, a period was investigated when nitrogen became the limiting nutrient. Release of phosphorus from the sediment and its influence on the eutrophication process were identified.
