Abstract: Swash flow on rough beach slopes, generated by bore collapse is investigated numerically using the Flow 3D CFD code. The numerical model solves the unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, the Re-Normalisation Group (RNG) k-ε turbulence model and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method in order to "track" the free surface and the head of the "current" as it travels along the rough slope. Two cases of slope roughness are investigated, 1. 3 mm and 8. 4 mm. Flow depths, depth-averaged velocities, instantaneous velocity profiles as well as instantaneous turbulent kinetic energy profiles are presented for six measurement locations. Computed flow depths, depth-averaged velocities and bed shear stresses are in good agreement with experimental data presented by Kikkert et al. (2012), especially at locations lower on the beach while velocity profiles are close to the experimental ones especially at locations higher on the beach. Moreover computed turbulent kinetic energy is in quite good agreement with the experimental one with an exception of that corresponding at the maximum backwash velocity.
