Abstract: This study present falling head tests on sediment erosion behavior through a circular orifice. The setup is a rectangular box of 50×50×60 cm. Two classes of uniformly screened sand (dp = 0. 13, 0. 25 mm) were used as the sediment material. By changing water head (hw =2, 4, 6 cm) above the sand surface, the geometry of the erosion void were measured after the discharge finishes. Experimental findings include: 1) the erosion process can be generally divided into three stages: initial stage, steady stage, and seepage stage. ; 2) water head has significant influences on the erosion void geometry including the volume and width, while particle size has more influences on the sand and water discharge rates; 3) during discharge, the sand and water discharge rates are linearly related before the test end.
