Abstract: Recently, many researchers have been making an effort to develop numerical models for predicting urban inundation damages due to heavy rainfall by coupling a drainage system. Generally, urban inundation is caused by lack of sewer system capacity. Although it is important to estimate inlet and overflow discharge through the storm drain, where the input data is for the sewer system and the output data is for ground surface, the calculation method and interaction processes frequently have not been clarified and validated. Therefore, in this study, the numerical model of storm water interaction among sewer pipes, manholes and ground surface which we have previously used (Lee et al., 2012; Lee et al., 2013) is improved and validated based on physical experiments. From the comparison, they showed good agreement in all the cases of steady state condition. In unsteady state cases, the suggested model successfully reproduced the experimental results for the occurrence time of ground inundation and the maximum inundation depth, as well as the inundation process trajectory.
