Abstract: The water levels were measured during flooding at four cross sections of the main channel of the Edogawa River and its floodplains to clarify whether they are uniform as is generally assumed. There were appreciable differences in the water levels between the main channel and floodplains for three of the cross sections. The differences were mainly due to small mounds that formed between the main channel and the floodplains, which hindered water exchange. The slope of the water surface in the longitudinal direction differed greatly between the main channel and floodplains, which means that accurate estimation of the roughness is needed to effectively monitor the water level for a river with a main channel and floodplains.
