Abstract: To explore the formation of high-fluoride groundwater has become the key point to avoid fluorosis in areas which take high-fluoride groundwater as drinking water source. In this review, fluoride origin, formation, influencing factors and remedial measures of high-fluoride groundwater are presented along with highlighting and discussing the process of fluoride enrichment. It is evident from the literature survey that fluoride minerals weathering and disintegration are the main reasons for the formation of high-fluoride groundwater, meanwhile semiarid climate condition, moderate water temperature, unique hydrological geological structure and alkaline water chemical environment can also promote the formation. According to high-fluoride groundwater formation mechanism and water chemical characteristics, several artificial measures were suggested in this paper. To effectively solve drinking water safety problem, replacing drinking water source was first recommended. If there is no suitable safe drinking water source, appropriate, simple, economic fluoride removal technology should be adopted.
