Abstract: River bed scour in cohesive soil at bridge contractions is a difficult problem to solve, in which many factors are included such as density, water contents, clay contents, mineral component and structure of the cohesive soil. Bridge contraction increases water flow velocity at cross section. Field investigation data collected at 34 bridge opening sites from China were used to analyze the effect of the plastic index on the scour. Furtherly, based on mechanic equilibrium relationship between the two forces of the cohesive soil, shear strength of the cohesive soil and water flow shear stress, critical shear stress for cohesive soils scour was obtained. An estimation equation of equilibrium contraction scour depth in cohesive soils was derived.
