Abstract: The mixing and merging characteristics of a horizontal buoyant jet in cross-flow is investigated by using the Plane Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) technique. The corresponding experimental setups are established. And the experimental details, which should be paid attention to, are listed as well. The kidney shape, horseshoe shape, bifurcation and wake vortexes of the temperature field for a horizontal buoyant jet in cross-flow are observed experimentally, and the preliminary analyses have been done. Based on the temperature field, the developing processes of horseshoe structure and kidney counter-rotating vortex pair are studied. The influence between horizontal buoyant jet and cross-flow is analyzed. With the y augment and the velocity ratio becoming small, the temperature field of horizontal buoyant jet in cross-flow experiences a process from kidney-shaped structure to horseshoe-shaped structure and then to bifurcation, and finally horseshoe-shaped structure disappearing, two divarication mutually mix. During the process, the velocity ratio between the cross-flow and the jet is the most important influence factor.
