Abstract: In order to search for the best management of farmland water resources and the effective ways of non-point source pollution control, a field experiment was conducted in a typical irrigation district in southern China—the Zhanghe irrigation district in Hubei Province from 2007 to 2008. Through combining with domestic and international relevant researches, it is found that: compared to conventional irrigation, water-saving irrigation technology has effects of both fertilizer savings and reducing losses of nitrogen, phosphorus and pesticide from farmland by decreasing water volumes of irrigation and drainage. According to the data analysis of the field experiment in the district, water saving irrigation can reduce more than 25% of the water volume of irrigation, 10% of the water volume of farmland drainage, 10% of the water volume of percolation; and increase 3% ~ 5% of nitrogen use efficiency; and reduce 5% ~ 20% of pesticides. The results illustrate that water-saving irrigation technique can not only reduce the water application, but also improve fertilizer and pesticide use efficiency through reducing the amount of fertilizer and pesticide losses from farmland.
