Abstract: The Froude number is an important flow parameter in open channel flow; however, many relate to it only as an indicator of flow regime, F=1 signify, critical flow, or flow at minimum energy level for a given channel and a given discharge; F>1 signify rapid flow or supercritical flow; F<1 means slow or subcritical flow. In reality, there is much more to the Froude number than a mere indexing of flow types; it actually indicates the energy level of the flow, and being a rather stable parameter in a given channel reach, it can give much information about flow behavior and about morphological characteristics of natural channels. This paper deals with some of these important but less known properties of Froude numbers in channel hydraulics.
