Evaluation of Biomass Carbon Sequestration Using Alumetric Equations in Pardisan Park in Tehran

Abstract: Concerns about the carbon released into the atmosphere and its adverse effects on the climate, human health, and ecosystem are on a daily rise. Among the most suitable approaches for reducing atmospheric carbon is carbon sequestration in forests, pastures, forested lands, and the soil. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the degree of biomass carbon sequestration in Robini pseudoacacia, Robinia pseudoacacia –Fraxinos excelsior and Cupressus arizonica forested lands. The barren land in the area under study was chosen as the control land. With due regard to the limitations of the destructive sampling method, we have used the Alumetric Equations for our evaluation. For this, we took 10 square-shaped plots with an area of 100 square meters. Inside each plot, tree characteristics such as diameter at breast height, tree height, trunk height, and crown diameters (large and small) were measured in order to obtain the volume of the tree mass. Then, to obtain an evaluation of biomass, we used the Hernandez et al. (2004) procedure. The variance analysis of carbon sequestration amount in different parts of the masses under study showed a significant difference for each component (p<0. 01). Carbon sequestration was more in the trunk and roots of the Robinia pseudoacacia mass as compared to other masses. The Robinia pseudoacacia –Fraxinos excelsior and cupressus arizonica did not show a significant difference in this regard. The greatest amounts of carbon sequestration in branches of different masses were found to be in the following order: Robinia pseudo acacia, Robinia pseudoacacia –Fraxinos excelsior and cupressus arizonica. Results indicate that afforestation in Pardisan Park has significantly increased carbon sequestration as compared to the control barren land.
