Sediment Transportation Around a Slit Sabo Dam

Abstract: Sabo is a technology to prevent sediment disasters and Sabo dams are often used to control debris flows in mountainous regions in Japan. In recent years, slit Sabo dams have often been installed to prevent debris flow disasters and to conserve sediment continuity. In order to clarify the function of slit Sabo dams, knowledge regarding the characteristics of sediment transportation around such dams is important. However, few studies about the function of slit Sabo dams have reported until now. Therefore, the authors have undertaken field observations to study the characteristics of rainfall runoff and sediment transportation around a Sabo dam which is installed in a channel in the Tottori Prefecture since 2010. In 2011, a flood caused by typhoon No. 12 brought sediment deposition to the upstream of the Sabo dam. In order to analyze the characteristics of rain-runoff and sediment transportation during this flooding event, numerical simulations of rainfall runoff process and 1D bed variation were conducted. As a result, the situation of observed bed variation around the Sabo dam could be reproduced well, and the balance of sediment passing through the dam during the flooding event could be estimated. The results of field observation and 1D numerical simulation of the flood event in 2011 are reported.
