Abstract: To evaluate the function of sand dunes as a tsunami barrier and the effects on reinforcing sand dunewith a geogrid and/or covering the slopes and crest of a sand dunewith concrete panels on the strength against anover-flowing tsunami, a series of model tests were performed in a laboratory wave channel. The results of these tests indicate that, first, a sand dune can function as a tsunami barrier and, second, to ensure a sand dune can survive a strong tsunami while functioning as a tsunami barrier, it is very effective to cover the crest and down-reach slope of the sand dunewith concrete panels connected to the geogrid layers.
