Abstract: Reasonable embedment depth and covering layer protection measure are key targets of immersed tunnel engineering design in consideration of join between hard tunnel and loose sediment where river bed scour may cause safety problems, then physical model test may be regarded as an effective technical mean to demonstrate rationality. This paper will present a physical test on local scour near Dongping waterway immersed tunnel located in the Pearl River Delta. Firstly empirical formula and flume experiment will be applied to selecte reasonable model sand and material to simulate prototype sand and covering layer. Based on physical model validation using historical hydrologic sediment and topography data, scour model experiment will be carried out under extremely flood condition. The results can be used to reasonable basis for river-crossing tunnel design, such as reasonable embedded depth and covering layer protection measures.
