Abstract: In this paper, we use aerial photos, survey maps and satellite images etc. since 1904 to compute the historical shoreline change at Sinchen Township and Hualien City in Hualien coast. The results show most of the shoreline were eroded during the analyzed period. In 1904 to 1941, shoreline may be retreated about 258m, in 1978 to 2009, the maximum shoreline retreated distance is 195m at zone 1 of Sinchen Township. In Hualien City, the maximum shoreline retreat distance is 125m at zone 1, and zone 4 has the most serious erosion in last two decades, the reason is the diffracted wave energy concentrated near it and lack of coastal sediment supplement, the average change retreated rate is -3. 67 m/year ~ -4. 28 m/year at this zone.
