Abstract: Based on the observed data and the former research on the width of regulation lines, the runoff and sediment characteristics are analyzed. This essay presents knowledge that the dynamic adjustment of regulated reaches still follows the principles of energy conservation and the minimum energy consumption trend. Two calculation formulas (20) and (23) of the width of regulation lines are deduced based on the theories of energy dissipation and the sediment transport equilibrium in the local and integral reaches, and the relation between regulation width and related parameters such as river regime coefficient, equilibrium coefficient etc. is discussed. The research proved that the relation between the computed regulation width by the developed formulas and the influencing parameters meet with the basic law of evolution of river bed. The application of the proposed formulas in the regulation reaches of Taipingdian and Mayangtan waterways located in the middle and lower reaches of the Han River shows the calculated results: the value computed by the deduced formulas fits better with the regulation width adopted by the engineering practice. The results of the study could serve as reference for channel regulation engineering design in alluvial river.
