Self Steering Dynamic Processes and Relocating Capacity of the River Schwechat

Abstract: One of the main purposes of the EU-WFD (European Water Framework Directive) is to protect inland surface waters, to prevent further deterioration, to protect and enhance the status of aquatic ecosystems, terrestrial ecosystems and wetlands directly depending on the aquatic ecosystems with regard to their water need (Art. 1, EU-WFD 2000). The potential morphology of the stream course and the bed morphology is one of the key parameters for river restoration measures as well as for impact analyses. Rivers are subject to self-steering dynamic processes in the lapse of time. Natural processes of morphological changes of the Schwechat River close to Vienna, a meandering river type, were used to improve and calibrate a morphodynamic forecasting tool called ERO-SED. The actual morphological condition was described out of hydraulic modeling results for single years. This forecast tool will help to decide whether and how to re-enlarging of the river corridor and re-establishing a near natural bed design during upcoming river restoration measures to make restoration measures a success.
