Abstract: In this study, based on remote sensing data and meteorological data, vegetation WUE and change characteristics from year 2000 to 2010, in Yangtze and Yellow River Headwater Region, were analyzed by light energy utilization model (CASA model) and FAO Penman-Monteith model. The results show that: (1) Annual average vegetation WUE in Yangtze headwaters region and Yellow River Headwater Region are 0. 54gC/mm•m2 and 0. 56gC/mm•m2 separately. During the calculating period, WUE showed a decrease trend. Furthermore, its decrease rate in Yellow River Headwater Region is faster than Yangtze headwaters region. (2) The spatial distribution pattern of WUE is north and west lower than south and east, and the higher altitude, the lower WUE. (3) The year of all vegetation WUE change trends to decrease. By the influence of alpine steppe degeneration, which is relatively more ser ious in Yellow River Headwater Region, its decrease trend is more serious than Yangtze headwaters region. For the variation pattern of WUE during the year, obvious unimodal phenomenon appears in Yangtze headwaters region, but stepwise increases and decreases present to Yellow River Headwater Region. It indicates that carbon sequestration capacity of the former is better.
