Flood Propagation Modeling Supported by High Resolution DEM: The Case of Tagliamento River, Italy

Abstract: Over the past twenty years numerical algorithm advances and increased computing power have led to the development of high resolution hydrodynamic models for a variety of shallow water flow problems including flood propagation and flood inundation phenomena. Despite the success of these approaches a number of fundamental constraints remain, in particular the simulation of shallow flows over complex and irregular topography. Accurate modeling of these flows requires suitable mathematical models and high resolution topographic data. A new set of two-dimensional shallow flow equations in order to deal with partially wet and very irregular domains has been recently proposed. In addition, availability of detailed topographic data-set collected using airborne laser altimeter or Lidar, allows for the construction of very accurate mathematical models. Furthermore such kind of data offer the opportunity for achieving a better estimation of friction coefficients values. In the paper an example concerning the Tagliamento river is presented and discussed. The work is part of the studies for the Tagliamento river basin management carried out by High Adriatic Water Basin Authority, with the aim to assess hydraulic risk, find solutions for flood control and estimate river bed evolution.
