Abstract: Characteristics of oscillatory flows around a submerged asymmetrical structure (we refer to this structure as the BaNK block) were investigated on the basis of numerical simulations. Komatsu et al. (2001) proposed ‘Beach and Navigation Keeper: BaNK System’ in order to cope with beach erosion and shoaling of fairways. In this study, a half cylinder was used as the BaNK block which was set on the bottom of an oscillatory flow channel. The hydrodynamic force acting on the structure and the velocity around it were investigated. The results of this study revealed that the residual hydrodynamic force increased as the Reynolds number became larger. Furthermore, residual currents were produced in the large area around the structure even though it was longitudinally only one, because a speeding forward current scarcely returned at once in the phase passing over the smooth side of the asymmetrical structure.
